--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------EXHIBITION SQUARE, is a small square, some would say tiny, in central York , North Yorkshire England.----- At a busy traffic light interchange is BOOTHAM BAR. There as been a gateway on this site for over 2000 years from Roman times. One of the main entrances in to the city . Present structure from 14th century. The barbican was removed in 1835.This is the old road out to the North and Scotland.----------------------------------------QUEEN MARGARETS ARCH (Bootham Postern ) was built in 1497 to provide entry to the Abbots House, now the Kings Manor, through the Abbey Wall at Bootham Bar. Originally the arch had 2 inward opening doors.-- Margaret Tudor was the daughter of King Henry V11.-------------------------------------------The ABBEY WALL can be seen in Exhibition Square, with a pub built up against it. The Abbey is ST.Marys abbey.---------------------------------------------------The ART GALLEY is a public art gallery of paintings , prints and ceramics,it is managed by York Museum Trust. The building was constructed in 1879 for the Yorkshire Fine Arts Exhibition. Hence the name of the square. The front of the Art gallery is said to be in Italian Style. A statue of William Etty an English Artist (1787-1849) is at a small water fountain in front of the building.--------------------------------------------KINGS MANOR originally the Abbots house of St Marys Abbey is now a department of York University. As Kings Manor it was part of the Council of the North, KIng Charles 1, Henry V 111, and James 1 all stayed here.-----------------------------------------------------------DE GREY ROOMS has a ballroom and is used for events.-----Exhibition Square is a starting point for Open Top Tour Buses of the City.
